Traveling as a photographer

After being asked what to take on a trip. I’ve decided to share this quickly. The trick is to bring gear that do not duplicate in function. The most important thing is to enjoy your time away, always bring less.

From top to bottom:

  • Tripod
  • Camera + spare battery
  • Lenses: cover the basics and don’t go overboard
  • Memory cards
  • Chargers
  • Travel adapters

The tripod is a funny piece of gear. When I don’t have one I want one, when I have one I forget to bring it. It’s just one of those tools that would elevate your photography but never thought of twice. I still always bring one with me, even if I don’t plan on using it. Carry it in your checked luggage. It’s always beneficial to do a bit of homework and plan ahead.

Always bring a spare battery.

Bring the lenses you need. I often travel with just an ultra-wide angle zoom, and a 35 mm prime. I know some people packing every lens they own… Do you really need that macro?

Memory cards, chargers and travel adapters… These are no-brainers, just bring as many memory cards as you can spare. Bring the chargers for your electronics.

PS: Not in this photo is my trusty smartphone.
